Fall Hikes in Stowe

This is the time of year when many take to the trails and the woods to enjoy the changing scenery and experience the wonders that fall brings.  The leaves are turning, and the trails are already getting covered with all the different fall colors.  It's been warm and dry, somewhat unlike fall, but as of Thursday, the temperatures will be cooler, and perhaps more invigorating to get out in to the woods.

This is my favorite time to go hiking, and the following are some of my favorites:

  1. Taylor Lodge, is a 3+ mile moderately traveled hike, starting from the iconic Trout Club and Lake Mansfield. This trail takes you through some of the most scenic woods in the area.  The drive out to the Trout Club is beautiful as well.  On the way back to town, you can stop at Long Winter Farm for farm fresh veggies, eggs and meats.
  2. Stowe Pinnacle Trail is a favorite among many.  After the hardest part of the climb, about 3/4 of the way up, it levels out, and ultimately ends up on top of open rock formations, with a panoramic view of all of Stowe, looking toward Mt. Mansfield.  Be sure to bring a wind-breaker in case it's breezy on top.
  3. The Mill Trail off of Notchbrook Road in Stowe, is rich in history, as well as scenic.  This is an easy to moderate hike on 31 acres of land conserved by Stowe Land Trust.  You will find a historic cabin there that has recently been restored,  with the  goal of educating the public about this historic area, and to further SLT’s mission of land conservation.

How Sweet It Is

Trapp Family Lodge Sugar House

How Sweet it is

Did you know that Vermont produces 40% of the maple syrup in the United States?  The season started early this year, and so far the sap has been running well.  With cold nights and warmer days this week, it should continue.  With that, Sugarmakers across the state will be offering gallons of the best maple syrup around, along with a variety of other maple products.  The following are some local favorites.

  • Nebraska Knoll Sugar Farm invites visitors daily and offers an educational blog, complete with a weather report, sap sweetness and boiling status of each day.
  • Stowe Maple Products, a family-owned and operated sugar house, is open year-round with retail items. They will even ship your syrup to you.
  • Boyden Valley Winery will have some free samples during Vermont’s Maple Open House Weekend, March 25th and 26th; and will be offering sugar-on-snow, maple wine and maple liqueurs, as well as free tours of the winery and sugar house.
  • Sugar Slalom, Sunday, April 8th, at Stowe Mountain Resort.  A ski race for all ages that's been held at the Mountain, since 1940.  A weekend long celebration of spring skiing and festivities, which attracts hundreds.

Nordic Skiing in Stowe - The Best in the East!

Stowe has some of the best cross country skiing in the east.  Since 1968, when the Trapp Family Lodge opened the first nordic center in the U.S., cross country skiing has increased in popularity.  An amazing fitness alternative or additional activity to downhill skiing and riding, there is a long list of places you can go.  Whether it's a quick, easy, cruise on the rec path, or a day's outing in the back country, Stowe Nordic's ongoing efforts to enhance the skiing opportunities in town, have created options for everyone.

Check out the Ski Guide on their website to find out where you can go, and what the offerings in the area are.  It is a wide variety, ranging from 40 km of trails at the Trapp Family Lodge; to Edson Hill, Sterling Valley, or the Mayo Farm loop, which is groomed by Stowe Nordic.

Stowe Nordic is reviving 2 iconic Stowe backcountry events.  Both will be low key tours over parts of the Catamount trail.  Both tours will depart from the Trapp Family Lodge Outdoor Center on February 11, at 9:00 a.m., with a bus ride to the start and will end back at Trapps where there will be a party afterwards.

So, let it snow, and enjoy the trails, right in our backyard!

David Budbill, Beloved Vermont Author

David Budbill was one of Vermont's most beloved authors.  During his prolific career, he wrote 10 books of poems, 7 plays, 2 novels, a collection of short stories, 2 picture books for children, and the libretto for an opera.  Well known for such works as Judevine, several new works of David’s are being published posthumously, including his newest book of poems titled Tumbling Toward the End, and a novel titled Broken Wing.  David worked on Broken Wing over the last 10 years, and is a story about a man who lives alone in the mountains of northern Vermont, and his relationship with his world around him, in particular, a Rusty Blackbird with a broken wing.  Unable to fly, the bird becomes trapped in the challenging winter climate.  It is a timeless piece, and is a story of a man living a solitary life, yet with emotional intensity.  A story of loneliness, survival, and tenacity.

Although David Died this past September, and will be sorely missed, we will continue to hear his voice, and to enjoy the treasures of his passionate efforts, forever.  For more information on David, and his iconic career, you can go to his website.

If you wish to purchase a copy of Broken Wing, or any of his other publications, as David would want it, you can order them from your local book seller, or at independent book sellers online http://www.indiebound.org/book/9780996267632

'Tis the Season For Giving

It's not too early to be thinking about where your holiday donations may make the biggest difference.  There are many Vermonters who are in need.  One of the most gratifying traditions is giving to those who need assistance.

There are many ways to give back to our communities and neighbors.  The following organizations are in continual need of donations and additional support during the holidays, and throughout the year:

The Lamoille Family Center in Morrisville receives calls and visits from families experiencing crises, every day.  The nurturing staff educate and support families through home, and community services.  They are also always in need of volunteers.  You can drop off food, gift and gas cards, and find out about other ways you can help by going to their website.

The Lamoille Community Food Share in Morrisville provides food security around Lamoille County.  You can drop off food items, volunteer your time at the Food Share, or make a donation through their website.  You can also find them on Facebook.   If it's easier for you, we at Carlson Real Estate collect food items for the Food Share on an ongoing basis, so please feel free to drop off any of your healthy canned and boxed goods, and we'll be sure to get them there.

Clarina Howard Nichols Center works to end domestic and sexual violence in Lamoille County. Clarina provides advocacy programs, emergency shelter, support and direct services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence as well as community outreach programs to affect social change.  Learn how you can help.

Green Mountain Habitat For Humanity, located in Morrisville, has been building affordable and energy-efficient homes for lower-income  families in north western VermontYou can donate funds, labor, materials, and services to help ensure the availability of affordable homes for Vermonters for generations to come.

Realtor Grant Helps Build New Mountain Bike Trail In Stowe

The Lamoille Area Board of REALTORS® was just awarded a grant from the National Association of Realtors, which helped to build a new trail in Cady Hill Forest.  The trail was just completed by the Stowe Mountain Bike Club, and is a re-route of an existing trail that will now allow riders to more easily continue from the end of Cady Hill Connector through to the upper tier of the Cady Hill Forest and Schween trail network.  The trail is fun and flowy, up or down, and not as steep a climb as the old alternative.

Many thanks to the Lamoille Area Board of Realtors, for recognizing the importance of recreation and its benefits for our community.  And, also to the Stowe Mountain Bike Club , and Stowe Land Trust, who both continue to enhance this multi-use trail network, and natural resource.  The board of Realtors was also recently instrumental in securing a grant for the new Lamoille Valley Rail Trail.
