Holiday Festivities in Stowe and Waterbury


During the Christmas and New Year holidays it is a very festive time in Stowe and Waterbury.  There are planned events, celebrations, performances, and activities.  So, no matter the weather or your busy schedule, there is something for everyone:

  • Cork Wine Bar and Market are kicking things off in Waterbury, Friday evening from 6-8.  Eat chocolate, drink wine, buy holiday gifts, be merry!

    A Season For Giving

    As we approach the holiday season, there are many Vermonters who are less fortunate, and in need.  One of the most gratifying traditions is giving to those who need assistance, which is a wonderful way to truly feel the spirit of this time of year.

    Vermonters have always been known for their generosity, and there are many ways to give back to our communities and neighbors.  The following organizations are in continual need of donations to further support our Vermont friends during the holidays, and throughout the year:

    The Lamoille Community Food Share in Morrisville provides food security around Lamoille County.  You can drop off food items, volunteer your time at the Food Share, or make a donation through their website.  You can also find them on Facebook.

    The Vermont Food Bank runs programs that help feed as many as 86,000 Vermonters who need food assistance.  Find out ways to give at their website here.

    Green Mountain Habitat For Humanity, located in Morrisville, has been building affordable and energy-efficient homes for low-income working families in north western VermontYou can donate funds, labor, materials, and services to help ensure the availability of affordable homes for Vermonters for generations to come.

    The Lamoille Family Center in Morrisville receives calls and visits from families experiencing crises, every day.  The nurturing staff educate and support families through home, community and center based services; and they are always in need of volunteers.  You can drop off food, gift and gas cards, and find out about other ways you can help by going to their website.

    Clarina Howard Nichols Center works to end domestic and sexual violence in Lamoille County. Clarina provides advocacy programs, emergency shelter, support and direct services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence as well as community outreach programs to affect social change.  Learn how you can help.

    Stowe Land Trust Conserved Properties

    Ever wonder about how many conserved properties there are in Stowe? Land conservation has been an important focus in Stowe, Vermont since 1987 and as many as 30 properties have been conserved since then. Nearly 3,500 acres of farm, forest and meadow lands, have been protected for public and community benefit. These properties help to maintain the magnificent rural and scenic landscape that much of Vermont is so well known for. In addition, to saving working farms, protecting scenic views, and wildlife habitat; many of these properties provide public access for recreation and other types of enjoyment. You can take a quick hike with your picnic, to Sunset rock, right from the village of Stowe. For bird watching and breathtaking views, the 15 minute hike up to Pinnacle Meadow is one of my favorites. For mountain bikers there is a wide variety of terrain, including Cady Hill Forest, Kirchner Woods, the Dumont property, and Adams Camp. For just a respite, visit any of the natural areas found at places like Joes Pond; or the H.D. Burnham, and Halvorsen properties. If photography is a passion, hobby, or profession, you will find endless opportunities for capturing iconic images at any one of these special places.

    Helen Day Art Center - Exposed July 12 - October 15

    Theres no shortage of things to do in Stowe in the Summer. Since there is so much to choose from, perhaps a brief run-down of whats happening will help to organize your summer calendar. The weather here has been fantastic, particularly on the weekends which has allowed for the undertaking of multiple events. The 4th of July weekend festivities were enjoyed by more locals and visitors than ever, and the sound of fireworks seems to still linger after sunset.

    Habitat for Humanity in Morrisville, Vermont

    Did you know that Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity is currently building a home for a family in Morrisville, Vermont? It is located on Mayo Road, off Tamarack Hill. There are certain days whereby work day projects are organized, so the home can be completed in time for the new family to move in.

    The mission of the Lamoille County chapter of Habitat for Humanity is to improve the lives of families in our community through constructing simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with families who currently live in unfit, indecent, conditions and have no possibility of obtaining a home through conventional means.

    They are always looking for volunteers, so if you would like to get involved, and hammer a nail or two, go to Habitat for Humanity, or call 802-870-0990. No Experience Required, and there is a manager onsite to guide you in the right direction! A group from our office has gone on more than one occasion, and it was amazing to see how much we were able to accomplish. And, it is a lot of fun! The Lamoille Area Board of Realtors has organized a team build day, May 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

    Stowe Real Estate Market Report 1Q 2014

    Real Estate Market Update

    Vermont is finally showing signs of spring beginning to emerge after a very cold and snowy winter. While thoughts transition from winter activities, to dusting off the bikes and gardening tools, some are still skiing in the back country and on the slopes. Buds will soon begin to blossom, as we expect the real estate market to do as well. Weve had an extremely busy winter with sales; and projections indicate continued growth. Vibrancy continues in the village of Stowe as well, with the new restaurant Plate, and what is reported to be a new store keeper at Lackeys. The 1st quarter of 2014 can be characterized as one showing another marked increase in residential sales especially compared to the 1st quarter of 2013. The number of home sales was up 60%! That is the most significant increase weve seen since 2010, which at that time was around 27%. A continuation of consumer confidence, buyer demand, low interest rates, and decline in inventory, are among the contributing factors. Residential inventory continues to decrease - down 11% - which represents a 10 month supply which is 44% lower than the 1st quarter of last year. The median and average residential sales prices soared 71% and 41%, respectively.

    Condominium sales show continued strength as well - up 20% in the 1st quarter. The amount of inventory of this category decreased as well, down 32%, leaving a 17 months supply. There was little change in the median and average sales prices.

    As for the land category, despite the inventory dropping 16%, there was no increase in the number of sales. We believe we may have a bit more interest in land this spring and summer though, since land prices and residential inventory have both dropped. Main Charts Line Charts Below you will see an interesting change in the selling price segments of the market. The shift has been trending more toward home sales in the $500,000 - $1,000,000, rather than under $500,000. The former price category has been increasing since the beginning of last year. At this time last year 73% of the home sales were under $500,000; and 20% were between $500,000 - $1,000,000 . The $1,000,000 - $1,500,000 dropped a little to 4%, from 7% last year at this time; as well as the last quarter of 2013. Pie Chart In the same categories, the chart below shows the relationship of sales price to list price. sold to list price Outside of Stowe, the rest of Lamoille County saw an increase in residential sales in the 1st quarter as well - up 38%. This mirrors the increase seen when comparing the last quarter of 2013 to that of the year before. The median sales price increased 8%, and the average 32%. The Inventory dropped even more significantly than Stowe - 27%. The number of Land sales was just 1 less, and the amount of inventory there remained almost unchanged. The majority of the home sales, 53%, were under $200,000. Lamoille 1st quarter 2014 main chart Further evidence of the Waterbury residential market continuing to be a tight one was highlighted by the consistent amount of low inventory seen there. Residential sales increased a small amount. Although the median price increased 23%, the average slipped 28%. Land sales in Waterbury increased slightly as well; and as seen in all other categories, inventory dropped there too - 21%. A decrease in inventory is a trend we are watching which could eventually lead to an uptick in pricing, as has been seen in other parts of the country. Our market, in general, usually trends behind other markets, particularly areas with larger populations and demographics.
